Meditation: A Necessity in this Pandemic
World history has been divided into two parts now, a pre and a post-Covid-19 world. These are unprecedented times, everyone is living in constant fear of getting infected by Novel coronavirus, the fear, the anxiety, and the constant pressure of our safety and the safety of our family and friends is affecting the mental health and wellness of many individuals.
COVID-19 pandemic has not only affected people’s physical health but also has a deeper effect on a person’s psychology as well. People are struggling with behavioral health issues associated with COVID-19, including anxiety, depression, increased substance use, and suicidal thoughts.
As we continue to survive in this uncertain time and situation, meditation could be the answer that we are looking for. A well-known practice that advocates calmness and stress-free living, meditation has been around for centuries, helping people with reducing anxiety and increasing resilience during this time of heightened fear and despair.
Meditation does not require much, to begin with, all you need is a quiet and calm corner of your home and 20 to 30 minutes of your day. Meditation is not an isolated form, but an amalgamation of many different things.
1) Helps in having a calmer mind-
One of the small habitudes that come under meditation is the practice of deep breathing, which has proven quite beneficial for many. It aids in expanding the lungs, which are helpful in fighting with covid-19 infection, also it nourishes in calming the mind down, which in turn benefits in reducing the stress hormone, Cortisol, which is released in our bloodstream and is responsible for compromised immunity and inflammation if not taken care of in time.
2) Meditation helps in connecting with your inner self As the Great
Buddha once said “What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.” Meditation helps one connect with the world within, as one regularly meditates, it helps them reconnect with themselves. Furthermore, it nourishes people’s insight towards their reaffirmation of work. Also, be more aware of what works for them and what does not helps them to be more connected to themselves and learn how to command their emotions and feeling fine.
3) Meditation helps in improving sleep cycle-
“A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor's book.” Meditation helps to attain better sleep as it relaxes the mind, reduces stress, and also helps improve the melatonin hormone, which promotes better sleep. A person getting enough sleep is more likely to have the energy to be active and engaged, and make wise diet and other lifestyle choices.
4) Mindfulness meditation encourages Attention to the present moment -
Meditation is all about focusing on the breath to modulate emotions. It includes physical postures and breathing exercises which are useful for treating a variety of medical and psychiatric disorders. Also, it enhances coping skills, a skill set we all need to strengthen.
The primary role of our brain is to work on survival- instinct and with everything that is stored in our subconscious minds and the current stress we often tend to waiver of either into the past or future. Henceforth, if we methodically meditate, deep breathe, it helps us acclimate ourselves to the current instant and be more in the present by releasing the stress and being more aware at this juncture.
5) Meditation helps in controlling emotions and building good relations-
Emotional wellness, too, can be supplemented through meditation, resulting in inner tranquility and joy. When you meditate, one creates an aura of happiness and peace. This increases a sense of positivity. You realize that, beyond your daily problems that cause emotional pain, there is a pool of joy within that you can access and feel more joy. Meditation helps you to recharge, refresh, and rejuvenate. This creates a contagion effect that will transmit to others.
Meditation can improve your relationships with family members, friends, partners, co-workers, and even your neighbors and community.
6) Meditation enhances concentration, attention, and focus-
Meditation produces a deep state of relaxation and a calm mind, providing mental benefits. Meditation can improve concentration, whether one needs to concentrate on sports, education, work, or hobbies. When focused, we can increase our effectiveness and productivity.
Meditation benefits us to return to a positive and energetic state which is very important to get through the coronavirus crisis. Positive ideation through meditation can help patients dealing with severe illness. Negative speculations can paralyze you emotionally, but an affirmative outlook can prepare your body for its best chance of recovery.
